Construction Zone

On Friday morning we did the all-important pre-drywall walk-through at the house to verify the placement of the lights, outlets, security gadgets, cables, and so on. The house is definitely coming along! Troy, who’s managing the project, pointed out that the crap economy is working in our favor. Subcontractors are available and in a hurry to get paid, so work is getting completed quite quickly. Closing will probably occur in April, but we’ll have a firmer date by the end of next week after the next round of inspections are finished.

You can now see the brick color we've chosen for the front (the sides and back will be siding). So far, nobody in the neighborhood has chosen this shade of brick. We liked the darker, more typical red brick as well, but so many people in the development have chosen it and we really wanted something different. Also, we like to think we're doing our part for the neighborhood by ensuring the houses don't look too similar! The shutters and door will be black, and hopefully everything will pull together like I've planned it!

This walk-through is a major milestone, and we're relieved to have gotten it out of the way before the baby arrives. Because he's a contractor, I had wanted to fly my dad out to DC to check the place out pre-drywall. But we received such little notice as to when the walk-through would occur that the timing just wasn't going to work. Besides, we have no reason to think anything is amiss, and we were given the option of bringing in an outside inspector if we wanted. After running the idea by my dad, who advised against it, we opted not to bring in a separate inspector.

And the next mental giant who asks about our house and responds to its faster-than-normal construction with something along the lines of, "Wow, that's fast. Kind of makes you wonder what corners they're cutting, eh?" will get smacked. I mean, come on. This ain't our first rodeo! This is not our first experience with new construction or developers! Seriously, if my dad thinks all is fine--and this is a guy who distrusts the construction of anything he didn't build himself--then someone who knows squat about construction is not going to worry me.
